Denard Span & Bryce Harper Collide

The following image shows Denard Span & Bryce Harper colliding in the 11th inning of the Nats Friday night loss to the Phillies. Span clearly was screaming / calling for the ball and as the left fielder Harper should have yielded to the center fielder. The 2 base error (charged to Bryce) was pretty costly and basically led to circumstances where the Nats lost the ball game. Take a look.

Denard Span: The Shrug, The Chicken & Waffles, The PED Test

Denard Span has transformed into Barry Bonds. Well not quite. But the Nationals outfielder has hit 3 homeruns in his last 5 games including a 2 HR game on Monday night in LA against the Dodgers. Span took Roberto Hernandez deep twice in the ballgame. When the game was over, a Nats victory, all of the talk was about Span's recent surge of power.  Here is what Denard had to say about where his power came from (unlikely restaurant chain), and what he expects MLB officials to do to him tomorrow. Washington Nationals: A Different Hero Every Day

The Washington Nationals have done something pretty darn amazing. The Nattys have won 10 games in a row, which included 5 walk off wins in just 6 games, a feat that has only been done a few times in the history of Major League Baseball.  The cool part is that this is a total team effort, and every walk-off had a different Nationals hero. A lack of hitting, some errors in the field, a running mistake, and a bad decision by Jayson Werth were all showcased during Sunday's 2-0 loss to the New York Mets.  The Nats managed just 4 hits on the day, only one more than errors committed, as the Mets took the series victory and the shutout in New York despite also getting just 4 hits.  It was a rough roadtrip for the Nats who ended 3-3 against subpar teams and who will now head home to face a tough upcoming schedule.

Welcome to Washington Dan Haren!  With the Nats new starter on the mound on Friday night, the Cincinnati Reds destroyed Washington at Great American Ballpark in a 15-0 beat down shutout.  The Nats didn't have much of a chance with the pitching staff giving up 19 hits and 7 homeruns to the Reds.

There was little to be exited about if you are a Nationals fan.  In their first true test of the season the Nats were embarrassed.  Haren only survived 4 innings giving up 9 hits, 6 runs, and 4 homers.  I'm not sure if he watched any of DC baseball last season, but that ain't gonna fly here.

Zach Duke was the only kind-of-bright spot out of the bullpen (5 earned runs lol) eating up 2 2/3rds middle innings after Haren's early exit to save some of the Nats pitchers.  But with Dukes departure in the 7th inning, in stepped Henry Rodriguez who gave up a walk followed by a grand slam.

It is questionable that Rodriguez is on the roster, let alone being placed in actual Major League baseball games.  How can Davey have confidence to put this guy in anything that isn't an 8 run ballgame?

The recently shaved Danny Espinosa finally picked up a hit (LOL), and finished with a single and a double and the struggling Ian Desmond picked up a double on his final at bat.  Denard Span was on base 3 times with a single and two walks, and Lombardozzi came into the game to hit a double late.  Other than that, there was no offense whatsoever.  The Nats couldn't even muster a single run.

Game 4 of 162 isn't a time to panic.  These types of games happen, and a 15-0 blowout is the same as a 3-2 squeaker.  Tomorrow the Nats will have a chance to show the Reds that Friday night was a fluke.  But when this series is over we will know a little more about the Nats...

Denard Span Not Recognized By Many Nats Fans

On Saturday afternoon at Natsfest, the Washington Nationals players in attendance were scheduled to appear at several different "stations" of the convention.  The tricky part for the players handlers, was getting the players from point A to point B without having them mobbed by fans.

Even when the players were just talking to reporters in the corner, two separate crowds gathered at each entry point, blocking the players in, not allowing for an easy escape.

For Denard Span, the hype was a little subdued.  Mostly because Span was hidden away in Minnesota and many Nationals fans have never even seen the new Nats leadoff hitter before.

We followed Span as he went from a photograph station to talk with the media and were surprised that nobody was asking for autographs.  A few fans turned their heads in a double-take, and only 4 fans decided to approach the centerfielder.  Was it the clothes?  Was it the newness?  Whatever it was, it was fun.  Take a look:
