Screech, G-Wiz, and Slapshot Dance & Gangnam Style

Who doesn't love when mascots rock out to popular dance songs?  The answer is nobody.  The following video was taken by a fan at a Nats game and it features 4 "local" mascots getting down to some poppin' beats, of course ending in Gangnam style (as all mascot bits do).

You've got the Nationals mascot Screech leading the way, the Wizards and Caps mascots (G-Wiz & Slapshot) on the sides, and for some reason the University of Delaware Blue Hen, YoUDee.  It appears to be inflatable versions of the back 3 guys.  Enjoy:

Nexus Connections: Teddy Gets Pummeled By Wizards Mascot

Sometimes the different DC Sports teams all come together to provide worthy (or non-worthy) fun and excitement.  Instead of just posting it a zillion times, this segment will just link you over to the main story.

The President's race got interesting on Sunday afternoon when a whole slew of mascots overtook the race and incited a brawl.  I saw the Delaware mascot, Georgetown, George Mason, Screech, and the tag-team of G-Wiz and Slapshot who teamed up to land a flying clothesline on Teddy.

Washington Nationals Bullpen Attends Caps Game, Caps Collapse, Gio Chooses Soccer

A few Washington Nationals pitchers made the day/night baseball/hockey doubleheader on Saturday.  Tyler Clippard, Craig Stammen, and Drew Storen were spotted in a suite at Verizon Center during the Caps matchup against the Tampa Bay Lightning following a loss of their own to the Atlanta Braves earlier that day.  The Caps were up 5-1 at one point, but you'll never guess what happened.

FP Santangelo Brings Some Natitude To The Washington Capitals

On Sunday evening, Washington Nationals announcer FP Santangelo attended his first Washington Capitals game, a matchup against the Buffalo Sabres.  Alex Ovechkin scored a goal 19 seconds into the game, and the Caps offense so far has been great.  After the Caps took a 4-1 lead, FP Santangelo tweeted the following:

We love FP at the Nexus, and we would love to hear him call a hockey game someday.  We think it would go a little something like this:

Screech At The Caps Game, But So Is Orioles Bird

Here is the Washington Nationals mascot Screech on the Ice at Verizon Center during Saturday afternoon's New Jersey Devils vs Washington Capitals matchup.

Screech, G-Wiz, and of course, because Ted Leonsis thinks that Washington DC and Baltimore are the same city, the Orioles bird among others took place in this exciting event.

Hey Ted.  This is Washington, DC.  We have a baseball team.  It's called the Washington Nationals.  Get that bird out of our faces!  I hope it doesn't get back up!

Washington Capitals New Player Mike Ribeiro Sports An Expos Hat

During the offseason, the Washington Captials signed a center from the Dallas Stars named Mike Ribeiro.  Ribeiro is not only from Montreal, but he was originally drafted in the NHL by the Montreal Canadiens where he played a few years of his career.

After Capitals training camp on Friday, Ribeiro emerged from the players entrance of Kettler Iceplex in Arlington with a hoody, sunglasses, and a sideways baseball cap.  The cap, was a Montreal Expos hat.

"I'm from Montreal"

That's what Ribeiro responded when fans asked him about his ballcap.  When fans ragged on him for not wearing a Nats hat, the NHLer responded by letting the fans know that it was the "same team".

Moths Attack Keith Olbermann At Nats Park

Keith Olbermann, former SportsCenter anchor, baseball nerd, and guy on some former? non-sports show, was at Nats Park for Tuesday night's game against the Cubs.  Olbermann tweeted the following:

Nexus Now: Meet Maniac Mike

Remember Maniac Mike?  Sure you do!  He was the guy who screamed for about 13 straight innings in an empty Minute Maid Park.  It was annoying.  It bothered the fans, the announcers, and probably even the players.  So who is this guy and why was he screaming!

I took some time to speak with Mike, and he actually isn't a bad guy.  He was just cheering hard (he says for both teams) and he was just having some fun.  He didn't even know he was on TV at the time.

Nexus Now: Interview With Rally Kid

At the DC Sports Nexus, we created a show to add to our coverage of the DC Sports teams.  The show is called Nexus Now and will be a weekly or monthly show with lots of fun stuff.  Each time we do it we will try to add new stuff and actually turn on the HD switch on our cameras.  Typically we will try to cover each team, but the first episode was very Nats heavy.

In the first (and possibly only) ever episode, we interview the famous Nationals Rally Kid, a huge 10 year old Nats fan who is traveling around the country trying to hit every Major League Stadium.  We talk about how he helped the Nats win, and we talk to his father about the famous Bob Carpenter Scorebook and the secret Carp doesn't want you to know.

I also talk about each of the 4 DC Sports teams, watch some dancing by umpires and Davey Johnson, and my favorite part, "Oh, Hello"!  Check it out!

Mini Tyler Clippard At The Nats Game & The Mustachioed Man

Here are two different fans that were watching the Nationals take on the Astros on Tuesday night in Houston.

Fan #1 Is the Mini-Clip.  Somehow, Tyler Clippard hass shrunk.  Either Rick Moranis was involved or he was eating Frosted Mini-Wheats.

And Fan #2 has the greatest mustache in the history of the world.  This guy is 100% Texas baby!

Teddy Roosevelt Is DC Sports

On March 28th, 2008, an oversized plush mascot resembling the 26th President of the United States raced across some freshly cut grass.  The occasion was the first ever President's Race at the newly constructed Nationals Park.

Forty thousand people rose to their feet and laughed as they watched a giant Theodore Roosevelt screw around in the outfield and squander an opportunity to win the race.  Teddy, as he is more familiarly known, crossed the finish line, but it was too late.  He had lost.

What started out to be a fun gag at the ballpark has turned into a metaphor for sports teams in Washington, D.C.  Teddy is everything that DC sports are.  In fact, you could say that Teddy IS DC sports.  He is a loser.

The last time that one of the major four DC sports franchises won a championship was when the Washington Redskins won the Super Bowl in 1991.  After some quick math you will realize that the victory took place 21 years ago.  Teddy hasn't won in over 250 races; DC franchises haven't won in over 21 years.

So why do we watch Teddy run when we know that he is destined to lose?  Maybe it is the same reason we watch the local sports teams when we know that they are destined to lose.  

We have hopes that maybe, just maybe, this will be the race.  This will be the race when the Capitals don't collapse before the finish line.  This will be the race when the Redskins don't run the wrong way.  This will be the race when the Wizards don't run out of steam in the homestretch.  This will be the race when the Nationals don't get attacked by a giant pierogie?

Well I'm sorry to say it.  Look at one of the greatest President's in our nation's history.  It may never be his race...and it may never be our race...

Just like Teddy, DC teams are often on pace for a victory, but in the end an egregious act causes their undoing.  Whether it be a high stick penalty, a player bringing guns in the locker room, signing  toxic free agents, or a coach quitting in the middle of a winning streak.  DC always finds a way to lose.

So next time you are at the ballpark watching a great President shamefully fail, take a second to think of the bigger picture.  Teddy and DC may never win.

As a fan all you can do is hope and scream...Let Teddy Win! Let DC Win!
