The Nationals lost to the Phillies 4-2 on Friday night in Philadelphia after a long and slow game. Before the game, Ian Desmond had some hamstring issues and was scratched, and Michael Morse suffered a hand contusion after getting hit by a pitch in the 1st inning forcing him to leave the game. The loss was the Nats 2nd straight.
Edwin Jackson struck out 8 batters in 6 innings, and gave up 7 hits and 3 runs. His stuff got better as the game went on, and he put out an effort good enough to get the win.
The Phillies went up 3-0 and just when it looked like Kyle Kendrick was not going to allow any scoring, Tyler Moore crushed a pinch hit 2 run homer to get the Nats back in the game and knock out the Phils starter.
After that, Charlie Manuel went bullpen crazy in the game, throwing 4 of his 7 different pitchers in the 8th inning. The strategy ended up working as the Nats couldn't get the runs needed to win.
The Phils tacked on a 4th run in the 8th after Chase Utley stole 2nd with no throw. The play of the catchers, even with Suzuki, is going to be a big problem down the stretch in small-ball situations.
The blunder of the game happened in the 9th inning. Danny Espinosa led off in the 4-2 ballgame with a single. The rally was about to begin. However for some strange, unexplained reason, Danny Espinosa tried to steal 2nd base and was thrown out by a mile. The play crushed the momentum, and even crushed the announcers, specifically Ray Knight who looked like he saw a ghost after the game because of that play.
Bryce Harper had 2 of the Nationals 6 hits on the night, both doubles.
Morse X-Rays were negative, but Desmond's injury from the other night was a hammy. Dezi could miss some time. (And should...hamstrings need rest to heal)
Another one tomorrow night in Philly after the Redskins game...
