Two Good Pitchers, One Nats Loss

Marlins 2, Nationals 1

Gio Gonzalez struck out 9 batters and walked none in 5 hit, 2 run, 6 inning performance, but the Washington offense provided Jordan Zimmermann-type run support and the Nats lost to the Marlins 2-1 on Saturday night in Miami.

Mark Buehrle, who was almost on the Nats instead of Gio, gave an equally impressive performance.  Buehrle gave up 6 hits in 7 innings, striking out 7 and allowing only 1 run.

Ian Desmond was the lone run for the Nats.  On a sequence in the 5th inning Desmond laid down a bunt and dove head first under a tag down the first base line for his 2nd bunt single in 2 days.  Desmond was then picked off but ran (out of the baseline) to make the ball hit him in the back causing him to be safe at 2nd.  Dezzy then scored with some speed around the bases on a Jesus Flores single.  Unfortunately for the Nats, it was the only run they would score.

Bryce Harper's hit streak ended at 8 games and Bryce has now struckout 7 times in his last 5 games (including the All-Star game).  After his 2nd strikeout of the day in the 8th inning Harper slammed his bat on the plate and had a word with the umpire.

In the 9th inning Ian Desmond's swings look awkward and on one he fell down to one knee. He has bunted in the last two games and it may hurt when he swings. Things don't look good for Ian who may need to hit the DL to heal up for the end of the season.

Sunday afternoon game in Miami next...
