The Nationals are coming off a series win against Philadelphia in which their offense showed signs of life.  They also receive great pitching performances from Stephen Strasburg and Jordan Zimmermann.  The same two things will have to happen if the Nationals want another series win against the Baltimore Orioles.

Series Preview

The Nationals and Orioles begin a four game set on Monday, two games will be played at Nationals Park and then the last two will be played at Camden Yards.  The Nats are 5-0 in interleague play so far this year, with all of the games being played at home.  The Orioles have been playing well as of late, however the bullpen has not.  Expect the Nats to try to attack early, and get into the depths of the Baltimore bullpen in order to gain an advantage in this series.

The offense is beginning to produce, with Stephen Lombardozzi filling a huge role.  He had a big weekend against the Phillies, and he will hope to continue his good run of success if he has any ideas of retaining the starting spot.  Tyler Moore continues to struggle, so we could possibly see Jeff Kobernus getting some time in the lineup over these next few days.  Expect the offense to continue in this series, as the Nats are facing a pitching staff that has not been very sturdy all year.

Drew Storen received a loss against the Phillies, continuing his struggles.  He insists that it is nothing mechanical and it is going to get figured out.  However, if it does not get figured out, the Nationals bullpen is stacked with guys who want his position.  Ryan Mattheus and Christian Garcia will be coming off the DL soon, and Fernando Abad looked very good in his debut with the Nats.  With this mini-competition going on in the bullpen, expect each of the guys to have very good results.

Notes
  • Ross Detwiler was supposed to start Tuesday, but was placed on the DL.  He will be able to come back in a few days, as the DL stint was made retroactive to May 16th.
  • Danny Espinosa has a broken bone in his wrist, while Bryce Harper has major soreness and swelling in his knee.  Both men hope to avoid time with the DL.

Song of the Series: Born in the USA by Bruce Springsteen

Monday is Memorial Day, the day we support and thank our troops for everything that they do for us every day of their lives.  After you thank any troops that you know, continue to show your patriotism by watching a baseball game and listening to an American classic.  On Memorial Day, the Nationals will be wearing camouflage hats with their uniforms in order to show their support.

Matchup of the Series: Tuesday's Pitching Matchup

With an unknown starter going for the Nationals on Tuesday (Duke, Stammen, someone from the minors?), there will be two inexperienced starters on the mound that day.  Gausman just made his major league debut last week, in which he lost to the Blue Jays.  The Nationals will have confidence going up against him, as it is only his second major league start.  However, the Orioles will be able to do the same thing, as they will face someone who does not start in the majors very often.  Expect a lot of offense on Tuesday night.
